WELCOME TO FFCD

Schools that intentionally integrate the development of pro-social behavior can significantly increase academic achievement and reduce at-risk behaviors in young people.  A safe and effective learning environment is most successful when children are provided with opportunities to understand, care about and act upon core virtues.  Virtues such as responsibility, self-discipline and perseverance are aspects of performance character and correlate to academic achievement.  Other virtues such as respect for one-self and others, integrity and compassion are examples of moral character and correlate to building healthy relationships.  Both of these dimensions of character directly impact a young persons future functioning in the workplace and society.

Schools are constantly engaged in shaping character whether they are aware of it or not. The challenge to educators is how to become more intentional and diligent about that process. Effective character education in schools needs to be appropriately modeled by all adults who come in contact with students. It has to be seamlessly integrated into all academic curriculum and aspects of schooling. A successful school not only provides students with knowledge and skills, but also has an important role in shaping attributes and social skills that develop the whole child.
“Top drawer teaching and learning can never flourish in a sterile or toxic environment.”
