The Colorado State Schools of Character awards program is sponsored by the Foundation for Character Development and the Washington D.C. based, Character Education Partnership (CEP).  The Foundation for Character Development was chosen by CEP to be the host organization for this prestigious state and national awards program for Colorado.  The awards program recognizes schools or districts that demonstrate an intentional approach to integrate character development into the fabric of their schools based on the CEP’s Eleven Principles of Character Education Quality Standards.  When schools implement the Eleven Principles effectively, schools tend to see positive impact on student engagement, school civility and academic achievement.  Schools qualified for these awards by submitting an application with exhibits addressing a rubric corresponding to each of the Eleven Principles.  Schools are then scored on each principle by an independent panel of evaluators from previous national award winning schools in Colorado.

This year Rocky Heights Middle School qualified as a nominee for the National Schools of Character Award.  Rocky Heights was one of 20 national finalists and will be considered by national evaluators as one of 10 national award winning schools/districts.  The CEP will announce the national award winners in late May.
